The Trust was Formed in the year 2000.That is approximately 2000 years since the Romans first set foot on Scottish soil.

"Following their initial invasion of Scotland in AD81 the Roman Legions with orders from the new Emperor ANTONINE PIUS re-occupied the Southern Uplands and the Central Lowlands from AD139.

A frontier was established on the Forth and Clyde Line and under the  supervision of Lollius Urbicus,  strengthened,  by the building of a linear turf fortification .This wall, known to us all as the Antonine Wall, stretched for a total of 37 miles from Old Kilpatrick on the Clyde to Bridgeness on the Forth"

The wall consisted of three main sections:

bulletA V -shaped ditch ,40 feet wide and 12 feet deep ,running to the north of the wall.
bulletA Rampart built of turf set on a stone base at least 10 feet high with a base of about 14 feet tapering to about six feet at the top.
bulletA military road with a width of about 15 feet running to the rear of the wall at a distance of about 150 feet and having a cambered and gravelled surface with a stone base.

Trust Profile:

Within the Croy section are some of the best preserved parts of the wall and ditch

Starting just north of the village of Croy (easily reached by bus , train or car) turn right of the Constarry road, at the nothern end of the village and follow the track till it joins the path to Croy hill (sign posted) turn right the footpath climbs upwards to Croy hill from which a fine view can be had  of the surrounding countryside. The site of the Roman fort is close to the summit of the hill, at this location there is also a gap in the ditch where the hardness of the underlying rock defeated even the skillful Roman engineers. Descending off Croy hill towards Dullatur there is a well preserved section of the ditch and rampart this continues eastwards towards Westerwood, Tollpark, and Cranhall to the railway arches at Castlecary at the A80 trunk road :an alternative route is to start at Craigmarloch at the canal bridge, the path climbs gently through the trees and joins a track turn left at the top and it leads to the Antonine Walkway continue over Croy hill down to the village of Croy and continue over Barhill to Twechar.
