John McColl and Croy
Community Council
The village of Croy is
situated between the towns of
Cumbernauld and Kilsyth. There are about
2,500 people living in the village, and
it boasts a Miners’ Welfare Society
and Social Club, a local pub, which is
called The Croy Tavern, and also one
church, which is called Holy Cross R.C.
Church.
Croy is famous for the entertainment and
sports people who have lived here. The
famous Jimmy Quinn (in the early 1900's)
and John Morrison (1930's), Frank
Meechan (1950's), Pat McMahon (1960's)
and Jimmy Quinn (1960's) - Grandson of
the 1900's Jimmy Quinn - all played for
Glasgow Celtic. Also, Tom Morrison, son
of John Morrison, played football for
Aberdeen F.C.
In the entertainment business, there was
Joe McBride, who was with the Black and
White Minstrels in the 1960's. Also, the
Late Great Accordionist, Will Starr, was
a Croy Man.
The 1960's Croy Boys Guild (under 18's)
was the first football team to take the
John Thomson Memorial Trophy out of
Glasgow. They defeated St. Rochs 4 goals
to 2 in the Final, played at Celtic
Park, Glasgow. In the Boxing world we
had a great fighters in James Nash,
Billy Clinton, and his son, Pat Clinton
- all great Champions.
In Bowling, in the 1960's, the Croy 4's
or Rinks won the Scottish Championship
at Queens Park, Glasgow, and went on to
represent Scotland in the British
Championships in Belfast, losing to
England. The Four Men who played were
John O'Donnell, Bill Friel, Willie
McCarroll, and John McColl (Father of
the author).
Croy also boasts a Silver Band, who have
won titles all over the UK.
So, for such a small village, we have
done not too bad.
